Screen Time Parent Restrictions

Modified on Tue, 6 Sep, 2022 at 1:59 PM

Screen Time is Apple’s integrated management system for parents.

It is gated with a 4-digit passcode that you would set and only you know.

You can do things like:

  • Set Time Limits for apps

  • Remove the App store to prevent the downloading of apps

  • Restrict access to specific websites (i.e. social media)

Strategy for Limiting Social Media

You have a couple of options in this area. You can set App Limits for these apps and websites.

Or, we often recommend having the student DELETE all unnecessary or problem-causing apps, then remove the app store.

To Remove the App Store:

  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time. If this is your first time here, you will be prompted to set a screen time passcode

  2. Then, go to Content & Privacy Restrictions

  3. Slide the top switch on at the top to turn on

  4. Then go to "iTunes & App Store Purchases" and touch the arrow at the right.

  5. Under "Installing Apps," change to Don't Allow

  6. This will remove the app store completely and the student won't be able to download an app.

To Limit Websites

Often social media apps, for instance, also have websites that the student can still access. If you are trying to prevent any particular social media use or gameplay, then also consider blocking the website as well in the Screen Time area.

  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time

  2. Then, go to Content & Privacy Restrictions

  3. Choose Content Restrictions

  4. Scroll down to Web Content

  5. Choose “Limit Adult Websites

  6. Two additional options will appear: Always Allow and Never Allow

  7. Under Never Allow, enter the websites you would like to block (i.e. instagram.com, etc)

This will work for both Safari and Chrome (if installed).

Once Screen Time is Set Up

Once the restrictions are set up, please feel free to share the 4-digit code with the Tech Office and we will keep it on file with the tech office. Then, should your student need an app, he or she can come to the Tech Office, and we can enable the App Store, then remove the store again after the app is downloaded.

Teachers are aware that sometimes students need to come to the tech office to download an app due to restrictions, so if it happens during class there shouldn't be an issue.
